Diwali is the festival of spiritual and physical lights celebrated on the 15th day of Hindu month of Kartika. It is a new moon night or Amavasya on Diwali. It is said that Rama returned from the 14 year exile and a ferocious battle between him and the Ravana, the king of Lanka. He rescued his wife after killing Ravana. He was successful rescuing with the help of his brother Lakshman, ardent follower Hanuman and the army of monkeys. As the night was dark many diyas and candles were lit to lighten their path when he was coming home. Fire crackers were fired to mark the victory of Lord Rama over Ravana. It is also called Deepawali, which means a series of diyas. The official holiday is declared in many companies. The schools and colleges get closed for a week.

There is an old tradition to exchange gifts and presents on this day. Its not the new fade, its the age old tradition. Earlier people used to give grains or other farm produce, poultry or dairy items, now such gifts are gone into oblivion and the luxury and ornamental items have taken their place. People celebrate it with great vigour and zest. They clean and decorate the house. They lit deeyas, kandils, series of colourful bulbs which are available in different shapes and sizes and bowls of water with designer candles. Everyone shops lavishly and wear new clothes on this day and women make snacks and sweets at home to give to the guests and also for the family members.
